Running Ahead of God – Waiting on God – Kicking Against the Goads

“Give me my inheritance.” (Luke 15:12)

Are you contemplating taking your inheritance and running off? Like the prodigal you think, “My father is taking too long in giving me the desires of my heart (Psalm 37:4). He is robbing me of my enjoyment now.” You have prayed and searched the depths of your soul and concluded that your desires are not sinful. So why is your heavenly father delaying? Thoughts assail you: “If I don’t do this now, it’ll never happen” or “Maybe I just need to get the ball rolling.” You have grown impatient. Do not do it. Do not snatch your inheritance and run off to the far country just yet (Luke 15:13)! Perhaps you do not believe that taking action now would take you to the far counrty. Be warned. If God has not given you permission to go ahead, or if you’re full of doubts, by running ahead you would be acting out of unbelief. Living in unbelief without God’s blessing is the far country away from your father.

Do not be like the Israelites who tried to take their inheritance prematurely. After Moses warned them, “Do not go up, because the Lord is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies,” they disobeyed (Numbers 14:42). The text tells us, “Nevertheless, in their presumption they went toward the high hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the Lord’s covenant moved from the camp. Then the Amalekites and Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah” (Numbers 14:43-45). Hormah means destruction.

Again, if you are contemplating making a decision and know that you do not have the Lord’s blessing, stop! Do not presume upon the Lord. He wants you to wait on him and trust him to give you the inheritance he has for you at the proper time, lest you be beaten down like the Israelites.

If he hasn’t answered you yet, know that he wants to you learn about him and his ways in the wildereness. Thereafter, you will be able to enjoy the land that flows with milk and honey (Numbers 13:27).
