Attention Jesus Freaks! Some of Us Are Freaking Jesus Out By Our Behavior!

I was thinking about DC Talk’s “Jesus Freak” album. There’s a liner on there, a quote that is attributed to Brennan Manning:

“The single greatest cause of atheism in the world today is Christians, who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, then walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.”

I would add this: “That is what other Christians simply find unbelievable.” I’ve seen some things lately that make me wonder if I’ve witnessed devils badly disguised as angels of light. I wonder if the people I am looking at are about to rip a mask off and reveal faces of hideous horror.

And it’s not like they’re the “big” sexual sins. They’re big sins, sinister sins, like pride and ego and a lust for power. Deceit. They’re all the worse because they can be disguised. Hideous.

But lest I fall, I pray, “God have mercy on my soul.” God have mercy lest I become the very thing I hate.

“Jesus, may I not freak you out!”

  1. I’ve been sharing these thoughts lately, Marlena! I hear it over and over again from people I come across; it’s all-too-often other Christians that make people reject the church (and send chills down my spine). Many of the most unloving, uncaring, selfish people I know are other Christians. Fortunately, I’m blessed to know some extremely loving, caring, and selfless Christians as well that help keep me from throwing in the towel.

    1. Hi Jessica,

I agree. And God forbid that I be a Christian that causes others to spit Jesus out of their mouths. I think that’s why judgment starts with the house of God.
